We’re proud to share a major milestone in our growth journey. Global Tilapia has become the first fish processor in Kenya to achieve FSSC 22000 certification. The international community recognizes FSSC 22000 as one of the industry’s most widely recognized food safety standards.

The highlight of the event was the official handover of the FSSC 22000 certificate to Joseph Mureithi, Founder and Managing Director of Camino Ruiz Agencies Limited, by SGS representative Mr. Kioko Ndolo, Business Assurance Manager for Kenya and Tanzania. The ceremony symbolised not only compliance with international standards but also the successful transformation of the company into an organisation built on robust food safety systems, operational excellence, and global competitiveness.

The event was further marked by a special prayer and commissioning led by Rev. Julian Kyula, who prayed for the company’s continued growth, impact, wisdom, and stewardship as it enters a new chapter of expansion and influence in regional and international markets.
What FSSC 22000 means:
FSSC 22000 is a food safety management certification benchmarked by the Global Food Safety Initiative (GFSI). Achieving it means an independent audit has verified that our systems, processes, and people meet rigorous international requirements for food safety – from how our tilapia is processed and handled, right through to how it reaches our customers.
Why this matters for our customers:
This certification is more than a badge — it’s proof of consistent, verifiable food safety across our entire supply chain. For our retail, wholesale, and institutional customers, it means:
- Confidence that every batch meets internationally recognized safety standards
- Readiness to supply larger retailers, food service operators, and institutional buyers who require certified suppliers
- A stronger foundation as we grow our capacity to serve both local and export markets
Voices behind the milestone:

Founder and Managing Director Joseph Mureithi called it “an important step in our growth journey,” crediting sustained investment in the systems, processes, and people needed to deliver consistently.
“Achieving FSSC 22000 certification is an important step in our growth journey. It demonstrates that we are investing in the systems, processes and people needed to consistently deliver safe and quality fish products to our customers,” said Joseph Mureithi (Global Tilapia Founder and Managing Director).

The Kenya Fisheries Service also weighed in on the achievement. Director General Daisy Muriuki framed it in terms of the bigger picture for Kenya’s fish industry, noting that fish farming and processing represent an opportunity to improve nutrition, create jobs, and drive economic growth – with certifications like this one strengthening the country’s food safety credibility on the global stage.
“Fish is not only food; it is an opportunity to improve the health of our people, create jobs and put money in the hands of our farmers. We want to see more Kenyans embrace fish consumption and take up fish farming as a viable economic activity,” she said.
A milestone for Kenya’s aquaculture sector:
This achievement reflects the broader growth of Kenya’s aquaculture industry as it moves toward more value-added processing and stronger, internationally benchmarked food safety standards – positioning local producers to compete for bigger contracts, both domestically and abroad.
Looking ahead:
This certification marks an important step forward for Global Tilapia, and we’re committed to building on it — continuing to strengthen our food safety systems as we grow to serve more customers, both at home and abroad.
